Post Godfrey's virtual world builds
I had no idea there were other SL residents here until I read Colin's recent post!

So here are some images of my current project, an "orientation island" for OSgrid (a virtual world made up of thousands of privately owned OpenSim servers - similar to Second Life in many respects, but with fewer flying phalli).

It's a work in progress; I haven't textured all the surfaces yet. All the sculpted prims, and nearly all the textures (anything with shadows and/or reflections baked on), were made in Blender.

Some of the textures look a little blurry; in order to cut down load times, most of the textures were limited to 256x256 pixels or below.

These are all inworld screenshots, not rendered out of Blender.

File comment: Another view of the arrival building. The palette is mostly monochromatic, with color serving primarily to direct newcomers' attention to specific things (instructional signs, the moving dots on the floor to direct them, etc.).

File comment: A corridor between two buildings. The environment is supposed to represent a moonbase (which gives a good excuse to confine newcomers to the linear path we want them to follow).

File comment: The lower level of the maglev station. This building is primarily eye candy, an example for newcomers of the sort of environments which are possible in OpenSim.

A few more.

File comment: The upper level of the maglev station. The "train" outside is just a placeholder to be used as a scale reference, until the actual train is built.

I spend most of my time in OSgrid (usually only showing up in SL to pay rent on a vendor booth) but my name's the same in both worlds: Warin Cascabel

Interesting. Are either of you guys making any real money out of Second Life?

Not really, but I haven't really tried - I've put up one object for sale* because people kept asking to buy it (a flyable Space:1999 Eagle spacecraft); since I put down the vendor, I've sold 141 copies of it over the past couple of years, at L$1500 apiece (roughly US$6, give or take due to exchange rates).

I suppose if I actually worked at it, I could make a fair chunk of change, since I guess that's not too bad for an unsexy vessel from a TV show that aired before most SL users were probably even born...

*Well, and a second, unscripted object that I sell for like 20 cents US, which I don't even keep track of sales for.

I made a few hundred here and there doing custom models and scripting for companies back when sculpted primitives first came out. Even now they're a bit hard to get into for most users, so you can still charge a pretty penny for them (and for custom paint on them).

I haven't been in SL for a while, tho. I logged in the other day to have a look around and test out the Mac client again (which has always been reprehensibly slow), but there just aren't enough hours in a day. ^_^;

Post Re: Godfrey's virtual world builds
Well lol what is real money. The short answer is yes, but it depends on how you count it. I have people giving me whole sims to build on and do with as I please, not sure what they pay in cost but it isn't cheap. I make 10,000 lindens here and there by selling my builds (I think that's 40 bucks a pop?)

So I'd say I could estimate that I make on average 80 to 100 bucks a month off SL. The number is going up and will go up more when I actually have a storefront and they implement HTML on a prim. I could earn lots more and save on time when they get around to mesh import.

All that is on top of the fact that my day job pays me handsomely to play in Virtual worlds as well.

Will I retire on Second life? Nope. Does it give me a venue to make more and more money and market myself across multiple channels allowing me to make more money. Yes.

C
